WRITING OVERVIEW
For the Writing test, the computer-based IELTS test time for Task 1 and Task 2 is 60 minutes. The convenience of taking the test on a computer is that the computer system will automatically count the number of words for each article, helping you control the number of words you have written, thereby presenting the test accordingly. *Cre: IDP Vietnam
Overview of IELTS Writing Task 1 and Task 2
For Task 1: You are required to write at least 150 words in about 20 minutes.
For the Academic test, the task may present a chart, graph, or diagram, and you need to analyze and describe the data in your own words.
For the General Training test, you will be asked to write a letter based on a given situation. The letter may be formal or informal, and it usually involves making a request, giving an explanation, or expressing a viewpoint related to the situation.
For Task 2: You are required to write at least 250 words in about 40 minutes.
The Task 2 requirements are the same for both the Academic and General Training tests. This task involves writing a formal essay in response to a point of view, argument, or problem that you need to discuss. Task 2 is worth twice as many marks as Task 1.
For both tasks, your responses must be written as full essays. You should not use bullet points or number each paragraph.
Assessment Criteria for IELTS Writing Task 1 and Task 2
Examiners use the following four basic criteria to assess the Writing test results, which apply to both the Academic and General Training versions.
- Task Achievement (Task 1) / Task Response (Task 2):
The goal is to assess how accurately, appropriately, and relevantly you respond to the task, using at least the minimum word count required. Key aspects include how well you develop your arguments, and the use of specific examples and evidence from your own experience. - Coherence and Cohesion:
This criterion evaluates the clarity and flow of your writing, as well as how ideas and information are organized. It includes the logical sequencing of ideas and the appropriate use of a range of cohesive devices (e.g., linking words, pronouns, and conjunctions). - Lexical Resource:
This assesses the range of vocabulary you use, and how accurately and appropriately you use it throughout your writing. - Grammatical Range and Accuracy:
This evaluates the variety and correctness of the grammatical structures you use, as well as how appropriately you use them.
